Grounders

During the 2020 lockdown I initiated time critical research around youth employability in horticulture and designed a test programme around the job of fruit picking with a team of 10 young people aged 18 -20, at a soft fruits farm.

Using an evaluation framework I reported the outcomes and explored the development of this model to promote food & farming education through practical opportunities.

Participant Comments:

“There are loads of experiences where you don’t get paid, it’s just a fun experience where you learn about the environment. But what I liked about this is that you learn and you get paid, it’s a job.”

"You gain a larger respect for the different lives people lead as well as where your food comes from. Going to the supermarket and buying stuff there’s an element of entitlement. It sounds cringe but every strawberry has a story behind it. People leave their families for months, even if I knew, I didn’t really KNOW. It’s an experience for which I am really grateful.”
